Welcome to my “Five Star Friday⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” review! Today’s five star read is Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan. My only intention with Five Star Friday reviews are to convince you to read a great book WITHOUT SPOILERS!!!!! So, let’s jump right in!
Rating – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice – 🌶🌶🌶
Genre – Romance
Disclaimers- Domestic violence, rape, mental abuse, and postpartum depression
What is this book about?
Imagine dating one of the most popular basketball stars and falling in love with his childhood basketball rival. That is what the main character Iris, was faced with. While some may think having the attention of two of the most talented, handsome, and sought after basketball stars is a win, it isn’t. Now, I promised no spoilers so lets move on.
Iris’s mans name is Caleb. Caleb is seen as this handsome, rich, gorgeous white man that any girl in the world would be lucky to have. But…. is that really who he is? You’ll have to read to find out! I promise Caleb’s true colors will have you finishing the book in one sitting.
August is the other man who is just as handsome and loved by women and his peers (except Caleb, duh). Without giving too much away, August might actually be the guy any girl in the world would be lucky to have!
So, just from this set-up you can see how Iris and Augusts love is forbidden. Because in what world would society accept a woman dating one star athlete and his rival next? Just visit any gossip site where a woman dates two famous men not even in the same industry, and see how disgusting the comments are.
What made me want to read this book?
As a romance girlie, one of my favorite tropes is sports romance! There is something about a man being disciplined that gives me all of the feels! He is disciplined enough to reach his sports dreams and he is disciplined enough to focus on ONE WOMAN! We all know athletes can have a different woman every day if they choose, but when he doesn’t …… need I say more? 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
So, I will most likely read any sports romance because I love to see the opposite of what the media portrays these relationships to be. Plus, I just love seeing women loved on properly! And an added bonus if they’re being loved on, taken care of, and building a healthy and wealthy legacy too!
The ending
If you are not new to the romance genre, then you know most books end with a happy ending. But somehow, Kennedy Ryan has a way of wrapping her romance novels in a tear jerking way! Yes, it may be the same old ending, everyone ends up happy, but the female main characters are taking us on their not so happy journey to get there. In that journey, you become invested and root for the main character as if she were your homegirl! AND I PROMISE, YOU WILL WANT NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR THE MAIN CHARACTER IRIS!
Who would I recommend this book to?
In conclusion, who would I recommend this book to? Every Woman! Every Woman that can handle the disclaimers I stated above!
There is a powerful portion of the book where two women were talking about domestic violence in front of Iris and they go on and on about how they wouldn’t dare stay and women who do are (insert any insult). As women, we have to do a better job of educating ourselves on these types of topics before we speak! I think this book does a good job of showcasing how hard it is for many women to leave, while showing a realistic journey of healing once you leave.
So, if you do not mind reading through a woman’s trauma and following her journey to happiness, I suggest you read this book!
